Meanwhile the South-kingdom of Gondor continued as a bulwark against invaders from the East, and then against a resurgent Sauron. Tolkien’s Middle-earth, much changes between the Second and Third Ages. In the north, Arnor broke into lesser kingdoms and was eventually destroyed by Angmar. Many wild horses and wild kine roamed the plains of Rhovanion. The map of Middle Earth shows that the Shire is on the very edge, explaining why. The Great River Anduin flowed through it, and the immense forest of Greenwood the Great was a part of it. The Shire is large at 18,000 square miles, and is mostly removed from the rest of the kingdoms of Middle Earth. ![]() The death of Elendil and his direct heir Isildur caused the kingdoms to divide, and they pursued nearly independent histories for most of the Third Age. Rhovanion or Wilderland was the name of the lands on the east side of the Misty Mountains, but was often used to include the wild lands on the west side, Eastern Eriador. They founded Gondor in the lands on either side of the Great River, reigning jointly under the High Kingship of their father in the North. Meanwhile his sons Isildur and Anárion sailed up Anduin, far to the south. He came ashore in the northern lands and there established the originally pre-eminent Númenórean Realm, Arnor, the land of the High King. They each played pivotal roles in the fate of Middle-earth, becoming central to the events of The Lord of the Rings saga. These are Arnor, Gondor, Rohan, Dale, Mirkwood, Mordor, and Haradrim. ![]() Though there had been Númenórean settlements in Middle-earth dating back through much of the Second Age, it was not until the coming of Elendil and his sons after the Downfall that these regions were formed into distinct political entities under the rule of Kings.Įlendil was heir to the Lordship of Andúnië and a descendant of Elros Tar-Minyatur, and thus the highest ranking noble in Middle-earth after he escaped the Downfall. Still, of the many regions and realms, seven major kingdoms often come to the forefront when discussing the lands of Middle-earth.
